I bet a lot of those here are also fans of LOTR. I hadn't spotted that though - I was thinking Greek mythology!

Yes, that does make sense, and makes for a less depressing ending!

Greek mythology..Prometheus or the Titan's in Tarterus?

A depressing ending is just not cricket! (I do think of our doctor, although Gallifreyan, as quintessentially English)

...indeed, an earlier Doctor (Peter Davidson?) was keen on cricket?

The dark side of the Doctor came out here.. but I am sure the Tardis is impregnable, so why didn't he just lie in wait there, rather than put others in peril?

I actually really enjoy the "alien" side of the Doctor, and having lived off the Virgin and BBC novels for the last eight years I don't find FoB all that inconsistent. The Doctor never uses the Tardis as a defensive position - he just doesn't think like that, I think. And the Tardis isn't *completely* impregnable - the first time he pulled this trick he was recovering from an invasion of the Tardis by the Timewyrm.
