Face of Boe - spin off?

So who thinks the Face of Boe would make a great spin off series? It could be a good bit of science fiction "proper" - lots of outer space sets and what not as well as being very broad in terms of space and time (much like Doctor Who!) There could also be a lot of Jack flashbacks. The Face of Boe seems like such a deep character, and the writers could have a field day painting on a canvas that large; it would be easy and fun to reintroduce lots of old characters as well.

Sorry if this has been brought up before -- new here -- haven't read all the threads.

Spoiler warning for those who haven't reached this stage! :-)

Welcome Kilooneniner!

I don't think I have seen a thread covering this before - I am not sure whether any of us have really discussed the Face of Boe/Jack connection (I'm still in WTF mode about that, even though I like the conceit of it).

I for one see that idea as having a lot of potential, and as you say, perhaps even overlapping with earlier Dr Who stories/characters.

Well I haven't seen hardly any of the spin off stuff so far, but my impression has been that they've been too narrow in focus (I may get educated on that.) The one episode of Torchwood I saw felt more like a cop show or something. A Face of Boe series would have more of an epic feel -- and Barrowman wouldn't lose his job! Really the whole story of Jack slowly transforming is easily enough to fill an entire series, and it makes sense that a person living that long would undergo a serious change of character.

Torchwood does come across a bit like SF cops and robbers - I think they are trying to imitate the X Files. Sarah Jane Adventures is looking promising, but yes, it does have a narrower focus (in and around a London suburb), and is aimed at a younger audience.

Good thought that John Barrowman wouldn't lose his job ;)

Easily fit a series with the same sort of longevity as Dr Who - they have 5 million years to play with.

For me part of what gives it all that suspension of disbelief is the way all the really far out stuff is spread out over time and space. Packing too much into too narrow a time frame makes it lose some credibility (for me, anyway.) Plus the spin offs are just too present day earth centered. I don't mind some of that -- it helps make the characters easier to relate to -- but I want some space opera dammit!

Yes, as a child, that was the main thing that frustrated me about Jon Pertwee's Doctor - he was stranded on Earth for most of his incarnation.

I loved Torchwood as much as I loved new Who. Usually I run a mile from spin-offs, and like you guys I usually vastly prefer real sci-fi rather than Earth-based, but ... Geez, I could watch Barrowman reading the news and think it was the best thing on telly. And the writing for Torchwood (barring the final ep which was massively disappointing) was some of the best I've seen, so it's restored my faith in spin-offs.

I think though a Face of Boe spin off would be tough. Boe himself can't really do much, an is too slow and cumbersome to make a good main character.

What I'd prefer is a series in the far future that tracks what Jack is up to in the pre-Boe period (if indeed he is Boe, which is debatable). See how he goes from Man Without Purpose to Wisdom Incarnate.

Failing that, I'd like them to release that period to either BBC Books or Virgin so they can novellise that period.
